Axiom Verge Developers React to 25 Minute (TAS) Speedrun

A Tool-assisted speedrun is exactly how it sounds. Instead of a human player speedrunning through a game, it's instead a program that's had exact frame-perfect moves inputted into it to give a theoretical perfect speedrun. Most strategies used in a TAS speedrun are not humanly possible as they require insane precision and even rapid-fire button presses that no human could replicate. But while a TAS speedrun isn't humanly possible, the program's author is still required to have deep knowledge of the game's mechanics to program the script in a way to pull off the insane speedrun.
Axiom Verge is a side-scrolling Metroidvania that was created by indie developer Thomas Happ. It was released back in 2015 for PlayStation 4, and eventually made its way to all platforms. In 2019, Thomas Happ revealed that Axiom Verge 2 is on the way with a slated 2020 release date, which was eventually delayed to the first half of 2021.

Nanoseconds precision?? XD
Wow respect to Tom for being a one man show.
Axiom Verge is a TON of fun, love this game so much.
Am I the only one who is blown away that "business guy" Dan actually speedruns himself? How cool is that and what a great way to connect with your community.
The developers just sound like super cool dudes
Really nice to see a TAS run included in this series, I don't think I'd enjoy it as the norm but it gets people more exposed to speedrunning in general.
Any other dev: "so this is an *exploit* ..." / "by *tricking* the engine ..." Tom Happ: "here we see the Nova weapon *harnessed* to its maximum potential in a way that only a computer can" This man is next-level in every way.

Yea only problem is getting someone fluent enough in english, I think.
When ai gets more developed humans could not compete skynet for real!
You gentlemen seem to be under certain misconceptions about TAS runs. Most of them ARE fully human controlled. Think of them as tiny segments, recorded individually, then all of the optimal segments are stitched together by the tas script. Now, there have been tas runs where the inputs are strictly digital (like when it's called for a physically impossible input ie left and right simultaneously), but make no mistake: most of those pixel-perfect, nanosecond timings you're watching are human performed.
Love this game. So excited for the sequel!

Support Tom and buy this game if you haven't, it's one of the coolest games out there and if you love metroid you'll love this game

It's what Metroid would have been if it was created in 2016
Not a Speedrun if its Tool Assist Superplay, just a calibration for futur Speedrunners!!!!
Can you do Psychonauts next, I'm sure Tim Schafer would be down for it.
I played for probably 20-30 hours in my first play through. I like to explore and try for 100% when I first play a game. Also I get lost
Huge fan of the game! Can't wait for part 2!
The game was definitely longer than 10 hours for me on my first play through. It was most likely what the marketing guy said at about 20 hours. Axiom Verge is one of my favorite games I have ever played

This game instantly went down in my book right next to Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger... ect, of my childhood. Not something easily achieved by modern games. I cannot wait for the second.
Props to the creator of this game.🙏🏼 First time I have ever even heard of it. I'm so glad I watched. ☺️
Why did it waste the time of saving?

basically to drop a "checkpoint" to use for check point reload teleport, as explained above.

Its explained later, it uses it as a means of teleporting around the map.
This is my favorite IGN series. Please keep doing these
And the point of a computer speed run is ?

Bc it’s cool to see. You could ask the same about speedrunning as a whole. What’s the point? Hypothetically there is no point. TAS’s are just the theoretical perfect speedrun. A lot of speedrun strats were found through TAS’s.
sonny K
2 dni temu
@Cris n Mary Fam so hypothetically there is absolutely no point in doing this, what they could've done is posted this hypothetical time on the speedrunning community forum, and then if people wanted they could've compared times. However when I posted about what is the point of this, I was actually getting at the point of posting this video on the devs react, as usual, I enjoy watching the speedruns and also what they're commenting on someone basically playing their game to perfection, but to watch some computer program doing a perfect run is about as interesting as watching paint dry. but everyone to their own.
Cris n Mary Fam

to show the hypothetical fastest time possible and compare to our current human speed. They compare times near the end saying its only a few mins off of the current WR human run.
Wanted more informations about Axiom Verge 2, but from my point of few, he said it will come out in March (maybe not exactly, but it sounded like March in my opinion xD )

Athetos, the original Trace, arrived on Sudra hundreds or thousands of years before the events of the game, so the Rusalki would be unable to send Trace home without time travel, which is an ability they lack. Instead they put him in a sort of comatose simulation of his old life.

Hands down the best series IGN has ever created. The IGN name is probably the lowest of the low when it comes to reviewing games, but this series is a very welcomed addition. Give the guy/girl who thought of this a raise!

The game is broken.
great format, dev reactions to the community are great
We biological machines are outdated
It was 95% business guy reacts, tom barely gets a chance to speak. the beginning clip where tom talks about mods being c&d'ed (looking at you Nintendo) is a discussion I was hoping to hear more in depth but that clip in the intro is the whole of it.

You could probably ask Tom directly about his thoughts for a blog post; he's decently active on stuff like that.
I have a ton of respect for Happ already, any marketing guy that he chooses after a certain disaster must be pretty trustworthy too, really cool choice for this series! Also, the is the calmest, “the game is getting utterly destroyed” reaction lol

inb4 people keep commenting "omg robots!" and didn't read the video description: - A human created the TAS, detailing controller inputs frame-by-frame (that's the "tool-assisted" part of TAS, guess what the S means) and saved it as a script, or as dwangoAC calls it, "the perforated paper for a player piano". - Assuming the TAS has been validated to complete the specified objective, then the script is replayed in real-time in a new run, back to the piano example, "the player piano plays the perforated paper", aka, "this video".

@P2dalow 420 na they show what is possible and find new strategies that might get mastered without at some point... also you can call everything a waste of time, especially gaming... if the people who do them enjoy it, whats there to argue about? :P

yesss love hearin devs POV of their games bein played
*Don't know if someone is reading this, but if you are: You are amazing and beautiful! I believe in you!* ♥️
While I understand and appreciate the usefulness of TAS runs, I have to admit that they're not particularly interesting or fun to watch in this "Devs React" context. Without the human element, there's not much for the Devs to be excited or impressed by, since they're just watching a program auto-play through another program. I love this series overall, but please don't feature any more TAS runs - unless the computer found an especially surprising and amazing method of speedrunning the game.

Dzień temu
the problem is they have seen and reacted to many speedruns already during GDQ and NoReset events so when they were trying to decide which run to use for this episode they wanted something that had stuff they hadn't seen before to try and get a few natural reactions to things they hadn't seen before that was the main reason behind the reason they used TAS run rather then normal speedrun. The TAS also really shows how clean the movement in the game can be once someone perfects the timing for all the chain teleport swapping among other things the TAS is only 5 minutes faster then WR and most of that was cause of the cleaner movement then anything else.

i agree. I like to see an actual human impress the devs by tearing their games apart in a single run

TAS runs aren't done by a computer. They are done by a human playing the game in slow-motion & w/unlimited save states.
spellofvishanti

Computers don't find things in TAS runs right? Like a human being put this run together and the program is just playing back what the human told it to do.

@Mama's Sunshine The marketing department only need to know the basics of a game to market it, this man here knows things at a development and design level of how the game operates as if helped develop it and that’s not the norm for the marketing department of a game studio.

5 dni temu
@Somdude Willson I guess my counter to that is just that it's so much more impressive to see someone playing in real time and pulling off all the tricks(of course the ones that are humanly possible), than it is to see a scripted run. With a TAS, the conclusion that the run will be as fast as possible is already forgone, it's just a matter of how much time is put into making it.
Somdude Willson
5 dni temu
This is a human doing the speedrun. They just did it while the game ran in slow motion, and with access to save states.
Man dont use tas thats lame. Its fun to see a guy on other side getting excited cuz he broke his previous times. Tas takes fun out of this. We know a computer can do it. Its the human element/ chance of messing up but STILL making it that makes these exciting.
Ricardo Buck
3 dni temu
@The Immortal Kahn HD Then that's a purely subjective opinion. TAS runs show what are theoretically possible inputs and movement but impossible by human standard, and there's an audience for that. We know a computer can do it better, and this video shows how it can be done. And many people are interested. That's the point.
The Immortal Kahn HD
4 dni temu
All ofnthe arguments listed above STILL prove my point. No tas! " Well aktually a human programed it" but even dev said no human can physically do it. Ive seen tas runs. Its more fun to see a physical humam sitting there sweating it outnover the times and seeing what skills they mastered to shave off 2, seconds. We know a computer can do it better lol
